The Fellowes Spectra A4 Laminator is designed for A4 paper. A4 is 210 × 297 mm—about 8.3 × 11.7 inches. US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches. That means a Letter-size sheet won't fit neatly into an A4 pouch. If most of your team prints US Letter, an A4-only machine will drive you crazy.
Check the maximum document width on the spec sheet. If it says 220 mm, that's the hard limit. Don't assume A4 means Letter. It doesn't.
Step 2: Run a test with the documents you actually process
Blank copy paper is not a test. Shredders jam differently on crumpled paper, staples, and folded forms. Laminators handle 24 lb bond differently than 80 lb text or photo paper. For reference, 24 lb bond is 90 gsm; 80 lb text is 120 gsm. If the spec sheet only says 80 gsm, don't assume it can handle cardstock.
For the Fellowes® 99Ci Paper Shredder, feed it what your office feeds a shredder: multi-page reports, paperclips, sticky notes, maybe the occasional envelope. If the specs say it handles staples and paper clips, test that. If it says continuous run time, run it for the full time, not for 30 seconds. A machine can look great for 30 seconds.
For the laminator, use the same stock you'll run in production. If you laminate certificates, use 80 lb text or cardstock. If you laminate ID cards, test with ID card blanks. The first run is always a test run.
Also check the source file resolution before laminating any printed piece. The commercial print standard is 300 DPI at final size. If the file is 72 DPI, lamination will not fix it; it'll just make it shiny.
Step 3: Know how a laser printer works before you laminate its output
Here's the part most people miss. How does a laser printer work? It fuses toner to the paper using heat. A typical fuser operates in the 190–220°C range. Laminators also apply heat, though usually lower. If you feed a laser-printed sheet through a laminator set too hot, the toner can soften and smear.
This isn't a theoretical problem. I rejected a batch of laminated labels once because the toner bled at the edges. The operator had set the laminator to thick film without testing a single laser-printed page.
So before you run the full job: print a sample sheet on the same laser printer, laminate it at the planned setting, and inspect the toner and edge seal. If the toner moves, lower the temperature or use a different film.
Step 4: Calculate total cost per page, not purchase price
This is where value over price stops being a slogan.
The lowest-priced shredder might look sensible on a PO. But if it jams, overheats, or requires a $150 service visit after 90 days, the initial savings disappear. My rule from managing procurement: the lowest quote has cost us more in 60% of cases. That's not an exaggeration—it's what the records show.
Do the math in exact numbers. Don't let your team use a rounding calculator to clean up the budget. Round the final proposal, not the per-page cost. A $0.003 per-page difference on 1.5 million pages is $4,500. Rounding to the nearest cent hides that.
Step 5: Check consumables and spare parts before signing
A laminator without pouches is a paperweight. A shredder without oil and a clear bin is a fire hazard. Before you approve, confirm:

This is the step that saves you in an argument. For each model, record:
- Order date and delivery date
- Serial numbers
- Tests performed—jam test, heat test, A4 fit test
- Pass/fail result
- Who approved it
We didn't have a formal acceptance protocol at first. The third time we got a batch with inconsistent torque settings, I built one. Since then, vendor disputes have dropped because we can point to a document instead of a memory.
Common mistakes to avoid
Buying on price alone

A rounding calculator is for rounding final numbers, not for hiding per-page costs. Use exact fractions until you're ready to present the total. Otherwise you'll make decisions on numbers that never existed.
Bottom line
A Fellowes Spectra A4 Laminator and a Fellowes® 99Ci Paper Shredder can be solid additions to an office—if they match your actual workflow. That if is your job. Verify the size, test the heat, calculate the real cost, inspect multiple units, and write down the result.
