What I'd do differently: use an online printer when the job is something your in-house equipment isn't designed for—custom die-cuts, unusual finishes—or when the quantity justifies a production run. For quantities under 25, a local quick printer is often cheaper than setting up an online order. For same-day in-hand delivery, you need local. For hands-on color matching, you need a physical proof, not a PDF proof.
The conventional wisdom is to always compare unit prices. My experience with 200+ orders suggests that relationship consistency often beats marginal cost savings. If one vendor has delivered on time for two years, a 2% price increase is cheaper than the risk of a new vendor who misses a deadline.
Part of me wants to consolidate to a single vendor for simplicity. Another part knows that redundancy saved us during that supply chain crisis. I compromise with a primary + backup system.
Common Mistakes to Avoid (I've Made All of These)
- Oiling only when the shredder jams. By then, the bearings have already overheated. Preventive oiling costs a few dollars a month.
